Project 8: Two Yoginis as “Artists in Residence” at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art (Project completed)
|
Lufthansa Airlines had kindly offered us eight air tickets for our Portals to Shangri-La: Masterpieces from Buddhit Mongolia exhibit at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, in Atlanta. We used two of these to fly over two artists from Mongolia: the yoginis Jetsunma Khajidmaa and her sister Soyolma, who are respectively the abbess and the discipline master at Baldan Khajod Ling. We used a thirs to send a translator with them: our good friend Enkee (known locally as Mongol Eddie), by trade a grand chef cooking tv show host, as well as the owner of the best restaurant in Ulaanbaatar, the Silk Road.
The two yoginis served as artists-in-residence at OUMA for a month during the Portals to Shangri-La exhibit, and led chanting and meditation every evening. Soyolma sat daily in the galleries, painting and demonstrating the traditional Mongolian tangka-making techniques. She also made herself available for interviews and discussions with museum visitors.
In addition, Jetsunma Khajidma gave numerous lectures in the university, and also taught and gave initiations at several of the Buddhist centers in Atlanta. |
