Project 10: Publishing a Seventh Dalai Lama text in English and Mongolian (Project completed)

Ven Sansarbat and Glenn Mullin in Gandan MonasteryMy good friend Ven. Sansarbat, who at the time was Foreign Secretary in Gandan, Mongolia’s foremost monastery, approached me with the request for permission for him to translate a book I had done some years ago into Mongolian. This was Gems of Wisdom from the Seventh Dalai Lama, a verse work the Seventh Dalai Lama had spontaneously composed sometime in the 1740s. Sansarbat envisioned this as the first of numerous translation and publication projects that he wished to undertake. His translation would be edited and published by a small Mongolian Budhist publication company that he was involved with, called Munkhiin Useg, or “Eternal Literature.”

To assist him with this project, we acquired and donated two laptop computers for his office, and also a good quality digital camera. We also agreed to purchase a number of copies of the production, so as to help him defray printing costs. We donated these copies to various monasteries and temples.

Not only did Ven. Sansarbat complete this project successfully, he then went on to accomplish two more great works with the equipment we had provided: a Buddhist art book: and a Mongolian translation (from the Tibetan) of Pabongkha Dechen Nyingpo’s great masterpiece Liberation in the Palm of your Hand (Tib. Lam Rim Lag Kyang)

After finishing this last project, Sansarbat entered his three year retreat. We wish him well.
